The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has recently released the 2024 results for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), and the statistics have sparked conversations among educators and parents alike. The performance trends this year reveal significant insights that could impact your child's academic journey, especially if they are preparing for the 2025 exams.

2024 WAEC Results:

Out of the 1,805,216 students who sat for the 2024 WASSCE exams, 1,332,089 students, representing 73.79%, obtained credits in a minimum of five subjects. This is a slight decline from last year, where a higher percentage of students met this benchmark.

More concerning is the fact that when it comes to securing credits in core subjects including both English Language and Mathematics, only 72.12% of candidates succeeded. This marks a 7.6% decrease from the 2023 results, indicating a growing challenge in mastering these essential subjects.

Gender Performance and Examination Malpractice

Interestingly, female candidates outperformed their male counterparts in securing the necessary credits, with 51.70% of females achieving this standard compared to 48.30% of males. This trend highlights the continued progress in closing the gender gap in education, though more efforts are needed to ensure all students reach their full potential.

On a not so positive note, WAEC also reported that 215,267 results were withheld due to examination malpractices, which accounts for 11.92% of the total results. Although this is an improvement from the 16.29% of results withheld in 2023, it still raises concerns about the integrity of the examination process and the pressures students face.

The Implications for 2025 Candidates

These statistics should serve as a wake-up call for parents and educators. With nearly 28% of students failing to secure necessary credits in key subjects like English and Mathematics, it's clear that more support is needed to prepare students effectively for their exams. The decreasing performance in these critical areas suggests that students are struggling with the foundational skills needed for success in higher education and beyond.
