Who are GATE Academy tutors?
All of the tutors at GATE Academy are experts with years of relevant expertise. Many of our educators work or have worked in schools and have experience with a variety of curriculum and subjects. Before being accepted into the GATE Academy umbrella, they go through demanding exams, screenings, and personality tests. We only accept 1-in-8 tutors who sign up to teach with GATE Academy.
What subjects do you offer tutoring?
We offer tutoring both physical and online for various subjects to students in the K-12 grade in all subjects such as Numeracy, English, Mathematics, Accounts, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, Economics, Design & Tech, Science, Additional Mathematics, Electronics, Business studies, Literature, Drama, Global perspective, etc. Our subjects are taught in various exam bodies such as the CAIE IGCSE, EDEXCEL IGCSE/GCSE, AQA GCSE, International Baccalaureate, OSSD, A’level, SAT, ACT, TOEFL, IELTS, WAEC, NECO etc

Private Tutoring
How does 1:1 tutoring work?
In the same way as traditional tutoring. The only difference is that the student and tutor are able to focus on a specific task or subject, and allows the student to experience a different kind of learning to potentially reach new skill and confidence levels. The tuition support could be physical or virtual.
Does GATE Academy offer online classes?
The world is now a much better place because of technology, which has also improved access to education. Online learning enables tutors and students enjoy one-on-one tutoring from any location in the world. Physical classes can be changed to online classes at any time. By cutting down on travel time, tutors may offer virtual classes on time and with all of their energy and avoid transportation hazards. The digital whiteboard and screen sharing functions allow for a more interactive and engaging tutoring. Recording tool enables students to record their classes and play them back at any time. Since both the tutor and the student can be located anywhere in the world, online classes allow the student to have a wide selection of tutors.
How long can a class last for?
Duration is set based on the client's request based on the student's age, skill level and grade.
Booking
How do I hire a tutor
Click on https://dev.gateacademy.com.ng/hire-tutor on any device and fill out all your specific requirements for your tutoring. A member of our tutor-matching team would reach out to you within the hour with a list of expert tutor-fit.
If I book an online tutoring, how do I get into my classroom?
You will find your tutoring schedules under “Home” page of your user dashboard. Please, click the “Join class” link at the agreed day and time, and you will be redirected to the online classroom.
Where can I find my tutoring schedules or bookings?
When you log in to the web app, you will find your schedules/booked classes under the homepage of your dashboard
How long are my unused sessions or classes available?
All unused credits at the end of a billing cycle (when your next payment will be charged) will be rolled-over for use for some lessons in the following months.
How can I cancel or reschedule a booked lesson?
You always have the possibility to reschedule or cancel your session in the GATE Academy webapp, as long as it is up to 8 hours before the scheduled start time for a physical class and 2 hours for an online or virtual class. All we require you to do is click on the “Reschedule/Cancel” button on the tutoring schedule for that day under the homepage and choose a new start time and/or date. Your tutor will then either accept or reject this request. We strongly recommend taking this action as far in advance as possible before the session start time. Please, bear in mind that if a reschedule or cancel request is at short-notice, your request may be rejected by your tutor, as they will have spent valuable time preparing for the session. As many of our tutors have busy schedules, they also lose the lesson time which could have been used for another student.
Where can I find my private tutoring balance?
In the webapp, you will find your session or tuition support balance in the “Wallet” section of the menu tab. You can also top-up your balance at any time as well as view your history of classes that held and the ones that don’t.
Can I replace my tutor?
At GATE Academy we pride ourselves with a team of experienced tutors, however if you need to change a tutor. You will be required to fill out our tutor-replacement form and the support team will replace the tutor with another tutor to fit your needs.
Prices
How much does the private tuition support cost?
Our tutoring sessions are charged hourly and the tutoring starts from a base rate of N4,000 per hour. Our goal is to find the perfect budget-friendly rate for everyone. You can contact a member of our support team to get more information
What payment methods are available?
The following secure payment methods are available: credit or debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Verve) and instant bank transfer.
Security
How does GATE Academy keep the online lessons safe?
All of our tutors have had an enhanced background check. We'll also be securely recording the lessons for safeguarding reasons.
How is my private data backed up?
Data is stored anonymously on a secure server. They are used to individually adapt and improve our service offering. Payment data is transmitted via a secure SSL connection.
Are my payments processed securely?
Payments on the GATE Academy webapp are processed by our payment partner Paystack.
Tutors
How do I get booked by a student for tutoring?
Students and parents can choose you from the list of tutors shared with them based on our tutor-matching algorithm in relation to the specific requirements they must have filled out in the hire-a-tutor form. Please, make sure your profile is up to date with all subjects and curriculum you teach as well as your general availability.
The student/parent cancelled or missed the session. Do I get paid?
If the student does not attend without prior reschedule or cancellation notice, wait 30 minutes and then let us know. You will be entitled to a “no-show” rate. If the session is rescheduled in time (at least 8 hours before start time for a physical class or a minimum of 2 hours before start time for a virtual class), you will not be paid.
Can I cancel or reschedule a booked lesson?
You always have the possibility to reschedule or cancel your session with a student, as long as it is up to 8 hours before the scheduled start time for a physical class and 2 hours for an online or virtual class. All we require you to do is click on the “Reschedule/Cancel” button on the tutoring schedule for that day under the homepage and choose a new start time and/or date. Your student or the parent will then either accept or reject this request. We strongly recommend taking this action as far in advance as possible before the session start time. Please, bear in mind that if a reschedule or cancel request is at short-notice, your request may be rejected by the student or the parent, as they will have moved other plans to create time for the session. As many of our students or their parents have busy schedules, they also lose the lesson time which could have been used for other important engagements. In the event that you don’t cancel or reschedule within the grace period, the parents have the right to cancel the entire tuition support with you or you lose a certain percentage of your earnings which will be paid back to the parent as a “no-show” rate.
Do I have to report my earnings to the tax office or inland revenue service?
If your monthly earnings exceed the marginal or minimum wage earnings threshold, you must report it. The rules and limits vary from country to country. You can find out about these directly from the tax office in your state or province.
When will my earnings be paid out?
Payouts are made between the 10th and the 14th of the following month.
What should I do if I’m asked for my private contact?
Kindly refer these parents to us. We are always in close contact with the respective parents as well as with the tutor and thus guarantee a seamless tutoring experience and process.
Become A Tutor
Can anyone become a tutor on GATE Academy?
For one-to-one tutoring, you should be at least 18 years and have professional, academic and teaching skills. To become a tutor, click on the “Become a tutor” section on the web app and follow all the instructions. Once we have received your application, we will invite you to a video call with our tutor verification team where we explain everything to you and test your professional teaching skills and your personality skills. Once we’ve done this, we will notify you of the status of your application.
What are the benefits of becoming an online tutor?
You can give tutoring where and when you want and save on travel time. In addition, you are part of a large community while the technical features and tools on GATE Academy ensure interesting, engaging, interactive and fun tutoring.
How much can I earn per month?
Your monthly earnings are heavily dependent on your availability. However, we will always endeavour to provide you with a steady stream of students and tutoring gigs.
How am I employed as a tutor on GATE Academy?
You work as a freelancer and earn an hourly rate. You are therefore not bound by any contract. If your monthly earnings exceed the marginal or minimum wage earnings threshold, you must report it. The rules and limits vary from country to country. You can find out about these directly from the tax office in your state or province.
Technical Support
I cannot hear the tutor or the tutor cannot hear me for online sessions?
Please check that the “Audio” function is switched on and that your microphone is on. Please, quickly tell the tutor or your student in the chat that you cannot hear them so they can fix the problem.
I have not received a code and cannot login into my class?
Please, try to log in several times. If the problem persists, you should log out, empty the cache, restart your device and log in again. If that doesn’t solve the problem, kindly reach out to our support team.
The web app or website does not work?
Kindly contact our support team with a detailed description of the problem and a screenshot or image or video recording of the problem. We will try to help as soon as possible.
